hitch a ride on the burning man

I just love you to death
So you promised for life
Just hope my intentions hold sway
From this place that I stand
Im afraid of such plans
Things never turn out my way
Its this duality
Thought to reality
Some bug will get in the way
Some days it feels
That I will never find land
Just spin around on the wheel
Wave hello
Shame we wont stay
Wave hello
Shame we wont stay
Weve been here before
And well meet here again
When we go through the end of the line
So love me to death
Stand by you in life
A love that’s tested in time
Welcome aboard the burning man
Hitch a ride on the burning man
Shame we wont stay

Debase Camp! Fuck Yeah!!

Burning Man… once again, the best damn city in the world for one week out of the year. This year was a crowning achievement in camp design, structure, placement and teamwork. Much went in to this year’s event from our little camp. And our little camp wasn’t so little once we got to the playa and found even more people to join us. Here’s how it happened…

another one down

Being back from Burning Man is a weird and unusual sensation. All that planning, all that work, all that fun and then all that work again. It’s happy and sad for me this time. I am so happy to be home and back with Veronica that I can’t even explain it. However, leaving behind all that we worked for and the fantastically amazing camp we built was very sad. Not to mention that not everyone we camped with will be around for decompression activities. I’m really happy that everyone got to meet the Canadians and that we had people in camp that nobody knew. I just wish that we could go on forever like that.

This year was full of crazy antics and great times were had by all. I will expound upon my experiences in another post and after I have had some time to process. I miss everyone already and I can’t wait for next year. I hope I wasn’t too bossy or irritating for anyone and I have to thank everyone in camp for making this year such a success.

More eventually…

7 days

Things are picking up! The trailer is all but completed, with the exception of the propane tanks and the completion of the shower system we installed. I will post pictures of her all painted up and fixed up inside, once I have a chance to clean her out. Currently, all of the random crap from our work weekend is inside and making me hate the sun-drenched driveway because I want her to be clean!

We’re not totally ready yet, but working this weekend and every afternoon will get us there. Most of the work is stuff I have to do, so I’m not complaining. This is what I wait all year for. The packing, traveling, building and relaxing are what makes it all worthwhile.

Burning Man Ticket warnings

3- DON’T BUY A FAKE
If you are buying a ticket and want to check to make sure it is legit – send an email with the full 8 digit/numerical ticket number AND full name and email address of the person selling it and if they are not the original purchaser, the original purchaser’s name and email also. Beware if someone will not or cannot give you the original purchaser’s information. Likewise, beware if someone wants you to send a blank money order to a PO Box. If a seller is sketchy about their info, chances are there is something wrong. ALWAYS have third party purchased tickets sent Fed-Ex with insurance. If you opt for regular mail you leave yourself open for the mysteriously empty envelope and a scammer claiming “Oh I mailed it, I don’t know what could have happened.” (Thanks Alicia, because of your scam we know what else to tell people to beware of.)

*snort* if the gate staff only knew how much hatred i have for this particular person– uh, i mean, scammers like this. ;)

everything’s coming up burning man

so, in light of having purchased a trailer for the event, i felt i needed to secure some way of towing it up there. we were considering renting a vehicle with a tow-hitch, when i had a brilliant idea.

on Sunday, i went to CarMax and purchased this:

Truck

good solution, eh?

trips-a-plenty

I leave in a few hours for New York. The Bronx, specifically. For those who aren’t up to date, I’m going with Veronica for her brother’s wedding. Should be a really fun time and since I have never been to New York, I am very excited. I plan on taking lots of pictures and try to get some good video, as well. We’re only staying until Sunday afternoon. That means we have to fit a lot of tourist crap into a short amount of time. Not taking any expectations, so I will be happy with whatever sampling of the city I get.

If I have internet at the hotel, I will try to post pictures. Otherwise, I won’t be able to post anything until I return from Burning Man, for which I will probably be leaving sometime early Monday morning. A good 12 hours of driving and getting water in Reno before I arrive in Black Rock City. I hope to arrive mid-afternoon, which will give me plenty of time for setting up my shade and tent.

Also, depending on internet access, I will try to post pictures to this blog. I know, I say that every year and it rarely happens. However, that is usually due to internet connectivity issues that are out of my control. So, don’t hate me if you get nothing.

Upon returning from BRC, I have a day recover and then it’s off to work at DreamHost! This has to be the most exciting part of this whole trek. This is the type of job I have been seeking for a long time. So, expect an update when I return and eventually, my Burning Man film!

See some of you on the Playa and see some of you when I return!

reflecting man

I have been putting off writing this post for some reason. I had started another post about the event, but found that I was just trying to remember the timeline of events. Instead, I thought I should post about my feelings on the event.

Burning Man 2005

This is a partial post I wrote, but never published.

My Burning Man adventure began well before leaving for the Playa. Per usual, there was the drama of who would make it out there and who would not. With many changes to the lineup of attendees, I reserved myself to focusing on getting ready and packing, regardless of who would be making it up to the Northern desert of Nevada. So, the preperations began. We rented a large 14′ moving truck, agreed to share that space with some nice folks from Long Beach and arranged to pick up their stuff before leaving. Tuesday morning, Amanda and I picked up the truck (with Asha’s kind help) and headed to the LBC. We gathered a crapload of stuff and headed back to Pasadena. After a long and tiring packing job, we were all ready to go! I said goodbye to my new love and my Mom and we were off! Loaded down and tired, we started our journey to Davis, CA.

Nine hours later, we arrived in Davis and were greeted with a warm welcome from Michael. He graciously allowed Amanda and I to take a break at his place. We chatted for a while and then had a nice hour nap. We awoke and headed out once again. This stop-off allowed us to rest our tired asses and also made for a nice halfway-point in the trip to Reno and eventually on to Black Rock.

A short drive later, we arrived in Reno, Nevada. Still early morning, we stopped at Denny’s and had a rather disgusting breakfast. Next, we headed over to Big K to gather our water and extra supplies. Loading the water into the truck reminded us of how tired and spent we really were. With the sun up now, we began our last journey out the Playa. Still unsure if I would be able to get into the event, I was tired and nervous. The drive out there was really quick, though. Seeing as we were almost a week early for the event, the 447 was virtually empty.

We made our final stop in Gerlach, NV for gas. With a full tank and now ridiculously excited and awake, we headed down 447 for the final 10 miles before Black Rock City. When we arrived, we parked, got Amanda’s ticket from Will Call and found a gate shift-lead. We told them who we were and Pearl (gate-god) approved us for entry.

Once inside the city, we headed to our desired destination (6:30 & Amnesia), only to discover that this year they weren’t allowing early entries to pick their own camping spots. After some stupid negotiating, we decided upon 6:45 & Catharsis as our final resting place. We rested a while and then began setting up our home for the next 2 weeks.

Being there that early was fantastic! The city was so empty that you could see all of the major areas of the city right from camp. Those first few days were hot and the nights were remarkably warm. Tuesday night, we relaxed and had some much-needed sleep. Wednesday brought with it the yearly challenge of keeping yourself hydrated. We relaxed quite a bit, but also erected enough of the camp that we were nice and comfortable. That night, we headed to the gate for our very first shift. We got our laminates and to Amanda’s dismay we discovered that my laminate gave me full access to the Commissary and her’s did not. Well, with not much happening at the gate and a full crew of people there to help, Pearl asked Amanda and I to walk the gate road and tighten all the colored flags that designated the edges of the road. We did this and then hitched a ride to the commissary for dinner.

We were both tired and still a bit dehydrated, so we went to bed. Next day we relaxed during the day a lot and prepared ourselves for our shift that night. Again, we found that these early shifts were the easiest, as there were hardly and people coming through the gate. I got pretty drunk that night and had a fantastic time with the gate crew. These early days were all pretty much the same, relax during the heat of the day and work all night. Saturday was the day we were waiting for with great anticipation, as that was the day the rest of our camp was to arrive.

Saturday morning, Amanda and I sat in camp, watching the gate road. We were excited as hell to have our friends join us in our desolate desert adventure. Considering there was even more drama regarding who would be coming and not coming, we were anxious to get them there and start the party. Just when we were about to give up watching the road, the two cars turned onto 6:30 and we both leapt to our feet, got on our bikes and road out to meet them. We brought them into camp and both Asha and Chris threw themselves on the playa and rolled around with glee.

The event had officially began for us, at this point. Everything previous was just an effort to spend as much time on the playa as possible and make sure our camp was set-up.
